The fourth, ground-breaking mystery featuring African-American maid and amateur sleuth Blanche White by Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Award winning Author Barbara Neely
Blanche White returns to Farleigh, North Carolina for the summer to help her best friend with her catering business. It’s a homecoming rich with the potential for new romance and fraught with the pain of facing the man who raped her at knife-point years ago but was never prosecuted for the crime. Shortly after Blanche arrives, a young woman is murdered and the clues point to the rapist. Blanche investigates, determined not to let him get away with another crime… nor is she willing to let his money-hungry sister marry a sweet, mentally-challenged man for his wealth. With her usual persistence, feisty wit, and indomitable spirit, her quest for the truth reveals the racism and sexism that still permeate the new south, but also the conflicts that divide her own family…and that might prevent her from accepting the love she so richly deserves.
"Blanche's quest, both for vengeance and to reclaim her life, drives a compelling plot. Neely is a fine phrase-maker," Publishers Weekly
"Blanche's voice is sassy and sexy, and her take on urban life through African American eyes is blade-sharp and sometimes as cutting," Booklist

If you are unfamiliar with the writings of Barbara Neely then you are in for a real treat. I read all three books, back to back and now that I am finished, I really miss this character. Women of a certain age will totally identify with the time that these novels are set. If you are a southern African American, it reminds you of all the pain and joy that living in the south can bring. I especially love how the author felt no need to hold back on the real ugliness and day to day struggle that people of color face while living in a country where we are in the minority . And do not think for a minute that the unfairness that we heap on each other goes unnoticed by this author.I don,t want to give away too much of the plot, just read, read, read, you will be glad you did.

Blanche Passes Go Blanche White series Book 4 edition by Barbara Neely Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I read all 4 Blanche books in 6 days. It is great to find books that you fall into and don't want to climb out of. Wonderfully written characters and a strong but very human heroine. I want more.
A great detective. I enjoy the backstory about her family and her adventures. I have all 4 books . I wish there were more.
Great plot development .
Neely is not afraid to tackle difficult life problems. And to do it with humanity, intelligence and even humour. Blanche White is a protagonist for all seasons.
I'm sorry to finish this series. Blanche White is one in a million protagonist and I have truly enjoyed getting to know her and watching her, and her friends and family, grow and change throughout the four book series. If the mysteries weren't completely surprising, the stories surrounding them were always winning and true. This last was a bit closer to the bone; harder to read for its honesty but no less engrossing.
Blanche is a well-developed character, who solves a mystery with common sense and a sense of purpose. Her views on life are insightful, but this never gets in the way of the story. Housekeepers/maids are frequently viewed without respect or are invisible. Blanche busts this stereotype wide open with dignity, humor and humanity. I couldn't put it down. Read the Blanche books in order to get the full enjoyment.
This is the last book in the Blanche White series. Wish there were more. I recommend that you read them in order. Blanche is a no nonsense woman who faces adversity head on. There’s humor, pain, and mystery in each book. I like that while the endings always include some resolution to the mystery, there are also loose ends ... kind of like life. Finally, Blanche gives the reader a glimpse of what it is like to be non-white in America.
Blanche White is a fully fleshed out character. She thinks, acts, lives and cares for characters she loves, ignores and tolerates those who stretch her last nerve and she manages to be part of the villian's comeuppance.
I have recommended the Blanche White series to my nearest and dearest as a unique voice that should be heard.
My own copies of the series are liberally underlined and often quoted, actions I rarely undertake without being moved and intrigued by excellence in writing. Neely just gets better and better.
